When the revolutionary designer William McDonough said “Buildings like trees, cities like forests,” he was referring to the harmony with nature that he hoped would soon come from a new, sustainable approach to the buildings and landscapes we construct. But his metaphor can be taken a step further: like real forests, cities are dynamic ecosystems that rely on the processes of decay and rebirth. Urban space blooms and fades and blooms again, an ever-changing, creative process that feeds and is fed by its inhabitants. Urban Indian is about all who inhabit those forest cities, who steward them and live by their fruits. Why the name? Well, to understand that, you’ll have to start from the beginning.
