EXPLORING THE MITHI RIVER:

A series which deconstructs the permeable border defining one of the world's largest slums, Dharavi.

These posters are part of a series that examines the interrelationship between population, ecology and economy in one of India's largest, densest and most fragile informal settlements, Dharavi.

Occupying the interstitial zones between city and swamp, Dharavi is a tenuous and intricate balancing act. Facing  constant threats of flood, demolition, and disease, the settlement nonetheless thrives with nearly 1 million residents whose annual economic output is estimated to be nearly 1 billion dollars — all on less than a square mile of land.

To survive, residents have met these challenges with incredible spirit and ingenuity, knitting together homes, workshops and gathering places from found materials and land carved, shaped, and bolstered – sometimes even with trash – from along the river's edge.
